Working Together

Lackawanna County

Interagency Council

Met at: Salvation Army

On:  September 20, 2006

The meeting was called to order at 9:05 a.m. by Chris Davis, President.

We had 25 members and two potential members present representing 23 agencies:  Chris Davis, Jane Oswald, Cheryl Rutkowski, Nancy Kilmer, Mary Louise Loftus, Maggie Newcomb, Neen Bracey, Brooke Addley, Ann Pusateri, Judi Cimino, Linda Denault, Janette Altenhain, Suzanne Lesniewski, Michele Davis, Evie Vitali, Jim Simoncelli, Erica Anstett, Olga Harper, Jill Blessington, Nancy Fahey, Keri Nat, Beth Rundell, Jim Festa, Marge Suarez, Bette Poe, Terri Stocki, and Mary Ann LaPorta.

Introductions were made and due to the speakers time constraints, we proceeded directly to her presentation.

v     SPEAKER – Mary Ann LaPorta, Director of Children’s Advocacy Center of NEPA, 1710 Mulberry St.  Mary Ann explained the previous “system” of reporting abuse compared to coming to CAC.  Previously, a child would need to tell their story as many as 15 times.  With CAC, the child and all necessary professionals come to the center and the child only needs to tell the story one time.  CAC opened in 1989 and was located at CMC School of Nursing until 2005 when they moved to their current location.  The center maintains neutrality until all evidence is in – they search for the truth.  They see children from infancy through 18 years of age.  By age 18, 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 7 boys will be sexually abused.  They currently conduct Child Abuse Education Programs for ER personnel, teachers and school nurses. They also have a three year grant to teach a Body safety program in schools for K-5th grade.  Referrals are made to them by Law Enforcement, DA’s office, ER and Primary Care Physicians and Children and Youth.  There is NO Charge for using their facility.  They receive grants, corporate and individual donations to keep the program alive.  Their goal is to become a line item on the state budget.

Minutes were reviewed and approved.  Treasurer reported a balance of $715.69 as of August 31, 2006.
