Welcome and Call to Order – Jane Oswald, President 2. Secretary’s Report – Cindy Kennedy, Secretary a. Approval of Minutes: There were no minutes taken to approve from the June Meeting. b. Membership Sign-in Sheet was circulated. New members were welcomed by Jane Oswald Council President and asked to add their contact information to the sign-in. Membership Applications are available online and membership is $10.00 per agency. c. New Members: Angela Beers, Devereux, Dee Hines, Penn State Cooperative, Diane Davis, Lupus Foundation, Louise Ligi, Serving Seniors, Kathleen Radkiewicz, Penn State Cooperative, Kenneth Motichka, Hospice St. John. 3. Treasurer’s Report – Judi Cimino, Treasurer reviewed the treasurer’s report: a. Balance s of June 01, 2008 $1189.75 Deposits: Luncheon Fees 6/5/2008 $30.00 Membership Dues 7/3/08 $10.00 Total Deposits: $40.00 Withdrawls/Checks: $0.00 b. Balance as of August 31, 2008. $1229.75
4. Roll Call, agency announcements and updates a. Introductions of members and their agencies and upcoming events noted: · Jim Festa of the American Red Cross indicated that there has been families re-locating to our area due to the hurricanes and flooding that has been hitting coastal areas of the United States. It has been a National Red Cross initiative to provide same services such as shelter and personal needs items for displaced families throughout the US. The Red Cross is asking to partner with local agencies that can assist with transitional housing and other items. If you have any resources to accommodate self-evacuees of these storms, please contact Jim Festa at the Red Cross in Scranton. · Jane Oswald reported that the NRCI has been working with local food pantries to provide free cancer screenings to the residents using the pantries. If you have any affiliation with a local food pantry and would like to partner with NRCI to provide screenings please contact Jane Oswald at the NRCI Office. · Jane Oswald: If you attended our meeting in May and heard the presentation on Sun Safety please take a few minutes to fill out the NRCI 2008 Skin Cancer Education follow-up Questionnaire provided by Jane. This survey will assist future planning of NRCI educational programs. · The NRCI will host a Celebrity Bartender Night at Cosgrove’s on September 25, 2008 Flyers for event were distributed. · The NRCI will once again host It’s All in the Game at the Radisson on Thursday, October 9, 2008 from 6-9 PM. The cost is $40 pp and $160 per team. You can register online or form more information visit the website at www.cancernepa.org · The recently passed clear air for no smoking in public places was enacted on September 11th. This smoking ban is in effect in all public places including local restaurants and college campuses. · Holiday Note Cards will be on sale to benefit the NRCI. The Holiday Note Card Package will contain 12 holiday blank note cards and envelopes featuring artwork from local cancer survivors. The cost is $15 per package. You can order your note cards by calling 941-7984 or on the website at www.cancernepa.org Deadline for orders is Monday October 27th · Marge Stair of the Salvation Army indicated that Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP) will open for applications on November 3rd and close March 31, 2009. LIHEAP if a two-part program for low-income families and includes cash grants and crisis grants. Funds are limited and need is expected to be very high this year with marked increases in heating fuels. More information for application and income requirements can also be found at www.compass.state.pa.us · Christmas Sign-ups will be conducted at the Salvation Army on Monday, October 6th and Friday October 10th from 10-12 pm and 1-3 pm. Applicant’s must bring ID, proof of income, all bills, SS#, birth certificates, children clothing size, and one Christmas Gift Wish per child. For more information contact the Salvation Army at 344-9878. · Lupus Loop will be held at Nay Aug Park on October 5th Brochures were distributed · Chris, Voluntary Action Center: “Sock it to Us” The VAC will be collecting socks of all sizes, colors and styles beginning October 1 through the 31st, 2008. Socks collected will be donated to human service agencies throughout Lackawanna County. There are several drop off places including the Albright Memorial Library, Lackawanna Children’s Library, Carbondale Public Library. Etc. For more information call the Voluntary Action Center at 347-5616. · Cindy Kennedy invited all LIAC members to Maternal and Family Health Services Open House celebrating 35 years of providing complete prenatal and postpartum care to low income and underinsured women in our community. The Open House will be held at Circle of Care 3rd Floor, 315 Colfax Ave., Scranton from 12 PM- 2:00 PM. Learn more about the services in your community, meet our staff, tour the Circle of Care Center, share information, and expand your referral network. Please RSVP to Cindy Kennedy at 961-5550 or ckennedy@mfhs.org. Lunch and refreshments will be served. 5. Old Business- Jane Oswald a. Call center visitation - It was reported by all those attending the Call Center Visitation that the tour was excellent and very informative. It was also noted that the call center had a very nice conference area which may be used by our Interagency Council for future meetings. If everyone is in agreement we will look into having a meeting at the call center. b. First IAC Health and Information Fair held Sept. 5th. We would like to thank Nancy Fahey for her hard work in planning our first and very successful Interagency Council Health Fair held at the Lackawanna County Courthouse. Over 20 vendors/members were present. 6. New Business- Jane Oswald a. Distribution of Mini-grant applications: It is a long-standing tradition of the LIAC to give back to our members agencies. This year member’s agencies that are in good standing with regular attendance and paid membership will be able to apply for mini-grant finding ranging from $100-$200 per grant. Based on the number of agencies applying we may be able to fund up to eight agencies. Applications are available on September 17th. The deadline for consideration is October 22nd. Grants will be awarded on November 19th b. Grant selection committee Members were asked if they were interested in being a part of the grant selection committee. A signup sheet was circulated. Members on the selection committee cannot be applying for a grant. 7. Program – Adele Zvada of North Penn Legal Services. An excellent presentation was provided by Adelle Zvada of North Penn Legal Services. North Penn is a regional provider of civil and legal aid for more than 40 years. They provide legal help to low income people throughout 20 counties in Northeastern PA. North Penn accepted 9,434 new clients in 2006-2007. They closed 9,180 cases which provided direct services to nearly 20,000 people. Some of the legal services they provided are. Protective from abuse orders, evictions and foreclosures, consumer credit counseling and employment law. If your clients are in need of legal assistance and they cannot afford to pay an attorney have them call Penn Legal Services at 1.877.9LEGAL.0 or visit their Website at www.northpennlegal.org. 8.
